Pixies Cottage, Tolpuddle. Sleeps 2

Cosy thatched cottage

Located in a quiet village, just a 15 minute drive from Dorchester, Pixies Cottage is an ideal couples’ retreat. Pixies is a grade 2 listed cottage (the oldest thatched cottage in the village) at 300 years old. This cosy thatched cottage provides spacious accommodation, furnished with your comfort in mind and equipped with all one will need for a break in Dorset.

The cosy living and dining area retains many original features including traditional beamed ceilings and leaded light windows. A wood burning open fireplace adds to the ambience of this idyllic thatch. A dark wooden staircase leads to the upstairs bedroom and separate dressing room/snug. Fluffy white robes are provided for your use during your retreat, why not pair with the vintage champagne glasses and really treat yourselves?

In the generously proportioned master bedroom you will find plenty of storage space and luxurious bed linen. The bedroom is complete with dual-aspect windows, making the most of the daily sunlight. At the rear of the cottage, steps lead up to the sunny patio. Here you can enjoy your morning coffee and breakfast. Further steps lead to a lawned garden with views of the surrounding countryside. Please note that the steps to the garden are steep.

The historic village of Tolpuddle is the home of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, famous for their crime of speaking up for better pay in the 1830s. A trip to the village museum is a must to learn of the harrowing tale behind the foundation of modern day trade unionism. One of the Martyrs, George Loveless resided at Pixies Cottage(according to research carried out by Dr Andrew Norman of Bournemouth University) in the early 1800s, who wrote eloquently about the Martyrs’ experiences and tribulations. Enchant yourself with the historic significance of your very own romantic retreat. During the month of July the village comes alive and celebrates the memory of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, a fun packed weekend of entertainment, stalls, political debate, comedy, music and a grand procession through the village. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Those interested in the novels of Thomas Hardy, might also wish to visit Hardy’s birthplace at nearby Higher Bockhampton, his grave at Stinsford Church or his final home at Max Gate near Dorchester. Both Hardy’s Cottage & Max Gate are also National Trust properties.

The Martyrs Inn, serving excellent food, is just a short stroll along the high street. A selection of eateries and amenities (including a local butcher and Post Office) can be found in the nearby villages of Briantspuddle and Puddletown.

A visit to Maiden Castle near Dorchester is a must, and don’t forget about the Cerne Abbas Giant etched into the hills to the northwest. Why not visit the famous Monkey World or Tank Museum at Bovington? For the energetic among you, there are footpaths galore providing the ideal itinerary for a weekend walking holiday.

The sea is also never far away with Lulworth Cove and Ringstead Bay about 30 minutes away, while slightly further afield is the spectacular Golden Cap and the magnificent Chesil Beach at Abbotsbury.

*Please note due to the age of Pixies Cottage the stairs are very narrow and steep with a bend. BBQs are not permitted in the garden of this property.
