Bronte Cottage is a charming cottage hidden away in a fabulous location a few strides from Wareham Quay and the river Frome. The cottage dates back to at least 1845, although the ground floor Purbeck stone walls date back a lot further (when they are reputed to have been used for livestock in transit when Wareham Quay was a major international port in medieval times).
A listed building, Bronte Cottage stands in Church Green, opposite Lady St Mary’s parish church, which itself dates back to at least the eleventh century. Wareham Quay offers relaxing al-fresco dining, local ice cream parlour, olde public house, riverside restaurant and of course a lovely spot to relax and watch the river float by. Enjoy a riverside walk where you will encounter diverse wildlife or just congenial company with other nature lovers along the riverside path.
Enjoy a good read in the cottage’s quaint walled patio garden. Bronte Cottage could be taken from any quintessentially English novel, whilst incorporating a complete recent modernisation to include a beautifully fitted stylish kitchen, roll top bath and finely decorated double bedrooms. An additional single bedroom is available as the cottage comfortably accommodates 5 guests, however head room over the bed is limited in the third bedroom and this may be more suitable as a child’s bedroom.
The Saxon walled town of Wareham lies at the gateway to the Isle of Purbeck with a rich and varied history dating back thousands of years. Bronte Cottage is situated in the oldest part of the town with easy access to the surrounding countryside (including the Purbeck Hills), the Jurassic Coast with its sandy beaches and fascinating ancient rock formations, and the River Frome (a sailor’s gateway to Poole Harbour and the English Channel). Local attractions include Arne RSPB nature reserve, Tank Museum and Monkey World near Wool, Farmer Palmers, National Trust’s Corfe Castle, Lulworth Cove and sandy beaches at Swanage and Studland.
The town itself is a delightful mix of interesting curio shops, Gas lit cinema, olde pubs, fine dining and modern bistros.
Guests should be aware that the stairs though steep do have a handrail.
