Is Swanage the best holiday venue to take the kids this summer?

swanage carnivalWith over 20 activities in the town itself and as many family friendly events throughout the summer, we think Swanage is the place to stay this summer.

Are you planning a holiday in the UK this year? Find out why Swanage in Dorset, should be top of your list. Swanage is blessed with a huge variety of graded accommodation for every budget and a plethora of free attractions and events.

Read on to find out what makes this small seaside resort so popular, why is Swanage so famous for its annual Carnival and days out not to be missed in 2016.

As i write preparations are well under way for this weekends burgeoning Swanage Fish Festival. The Festival organisers mission statement ‘Swanage Fish Festival is a tribute to our long heritage and connection with the fish and the sea.’ clearly outlines part of the reason why Swanage is so popular with guests. This lovely seaside town has broken away from the traditional image of Englands seaside towns and now offers a cleaner, crisper environment, whilst retaining all that reminds us of Britains heyday,.

Swanage is now a hotspot for entertainment and family fun. Swanage Carnival (30th July – 6th Aug) which is perhaps Englands oldest Regatta is a week long event with a national reputation, attracting thousands to over 100 events, which includes fireworks extravaganza (free), live music, sailing regatta, yard of ale competition, dog show, half marathon, bay swim and air displays; all of which are free! Although i live locally, i would happily holiday in Swanage for this amazing week of fun.

We asked Swanage Carnival Secretary Mr Wright why he thinks Swanage and its Carnival are so popular:

“Swanage has the charm of a traditional seaside town with award winning beaches but is also a hub of year round activity hosting a diverse range of events that embrace our beautiful surroundings and showcase what our community has to offer.  Despite only being a small town Swanage makes a big impression on people, drawing visitors from far and wide, whilst maintaining a strong community spirit that sets it apart.

Swanage Carnival is just one of many events taking place in the town each year.  Carnival mixes the tradition of a long established family focused event with the magic of staging new and exciting events.  The event is run by a fantastic group of volunteers whose aim is put on a great show and to raise money for local charities and good causes.  The 8 day event sees local businesses and community working together to make it a fantastic time for locals and visitors alike.”

Swanage is now home to over 20 festivals and events, as well as the Carnival you can enjoy autumnal folk and blues festival, summer jazz festival and high brow Literary Festival in February. Swanage is chosen to host these events as it is a beautiful seaside town, with clean bathing waters and long sandy beach. Although you will find the traditional amusement arcade, fish and chip shop and beach shop, you will also find a more up market vibe with fashionable retail stores, delicatessens and art galleries.

I enjoy taking my little ones on the steam railway that chugs through the Purbeck countryside between Corfe Castle (5 miles from Swanage) and Swanage. From the vantage point of a vintage steam railway carriage you can really appreciate how stunning and varied this hidden corner of Dorset is. As we pull into Swanage station, which has been carefully restored, the kids get excited about paddling in the sea, building sandcastles or partaking in a healthy game of pitch and putt.

The accommodation in Swanage varies from imposing Victorian houses, family bungalows to quaint Purbeck stone cottages. Swanage is unusual, in that most of the town runs directly behind the beach, and therefore many holiday homes offer a fabulous sea view. The long bay is nestled between Old Harry Rocks and Durlston Country Park and overlooks the Isle of Wight and Bournemouth.

If you want to know more about visiting Swanage during carnival week, we thoroughly recommend visiting the carnival website, which lists all the fantastic events you can enjoy.
